Lion Broadside

Kit Features

  • Etched brass fold-up construction.

  • Steel ‘guitar wire’ springing.

  • Primary and Secondary springing.

  • Primary springing by two independent spring beams on each side of each bogie to mimic the sprung equalization beams of the prototype.

  • Secure fit to locomotive chassis block, using an etched brass pivot frame.

  • Adjustable ride height using plastic card spacers.

  • Uses original A1A drive units, with straightforward modifications.

  • The centre, undriven axles are securely located and weighted.

  • The original cosmetic bogie sideframes are re-used, suitable fixing surfaces being provided.

Pivot Frame
The bogies are mounted in the locomotive by etched brass pivot frames secured to the chassis block. The bolster tops are secured to the pivot frames by a thread-locked brass screw, under a slight pre-tension to ensure that the bolster swivels freely but without any rocking movement. A plastic card spacer between the two allows fine control of ride height.
Lion Drive Unit
Heljan drive unit, temporarily separated from its undertray, modified to fit sprung bogie. External fixings and clips are removed, and the slot for the centre, undriven, axle is opened out so that the unit does not interfere with the movement of that axle. The original pickup strips are glued to the side of the unit, slotted in to the residual stubs of the sideframe mounting spigots.
Lion Subframe
Subframe for Lion bogie kit. The four wire beam secondary springs are fitted.
Lion wheeled bogie components
Lion bogie subframe, carried on Ultrascale P4 wheelsets retained by the wire beam primary springs, and with the bolster secured and supported in place above by the secondary spring beams.
Cosmetic frames fitted
The cosmetic sideframes wrap around the brass subframe with little modification, fixed to the end stretchers and intermediate outriggers. An alternative outer end stretcher is provided to allow the NEM coupler pockets to be retained.
Fitted drive unit
The drive unit in place in the subframe. The bolster arches over the drive unit when fitted.
